How To Unwind Your Monkey Mind - and get yourself Realigned

How to Unwind your Monkey Mind… and get yourself Realigned!

I’m sure you are familiar with your own “monkey mind.” That constant non-stop chatter that fills your head with noisy incessant distracting thoughts. Buddha described the human mind more than 2,500 years ago as being filled with drunken monkeys, jumping around, screeching, chattering, carrying on endlessly. We all have monkey minds with dozens of monkeys all clamoring for attention. Fear is an especially loud monkey, sounding the alarm incessantly, pointing out all the things we should be wary of and everything that could go wrong. Our monkey minds are not stupid. We’re the ones that spend most of our lives letting them run the show… and we think we’re so smart. Our monkeys have voices of fear, anxiety, worry and other negative self-talk. They can really get in our way and prevent us from being our true selves. All that negativity affects our mood making us unhappy, restless, frustrated, angry, bitter and disappointed. It hampers our ability to concentrate, it holds us back and makes us believe we are worthless. It’s very stressful to have a barrel of monkeys screeching in our head all day long!

The question is, how can you unwind your monkey mind?

It’s very likely that up until this point you’ve allowed your monkey mind to run wild, not knowing how to stop it. Just telling your monkey mind “Stop – your done for today!” usually doesn’t help. At least for me it didn’t, the monkeys kept on making a fuss. It’s useless to fight with the monkeys or to try to banish them from your mind because, as we all know, that which you resist persists. BG5 shows us where our “monkeys” are brought to life and how they are nurtured. In BG5 we can clearly identify their “homes” by looking at our ‘Shadows & Distractions’. These are some of the chattering inner dialogues they produce.

Do you recognize any of this monkey mind chatter?

  • I am worthless, I am not good enough.
  • I have to prove or improve myself.
  • I’m not going to say anything because I don’t want to cause an upset.
  • I’m going to be really nice and smile a lot so they like me.
  • Who am I? I feel lost and adrift.
  • What is my role in life? I’ll never find my purpose.
  • If I let go of this job – I won’t be able to find another that pays as well.
  • I will stay in this job even though I hate it or even though my boss is abusive because at least I have a job.
  • I’m terrified to try something new because I might fail.

Coming to BG5 has helped me tremendously in understanding how my monkey mind works, in understanding where my “monkeys” originate from. This has allowed me to be more compassionate, kind and loving with myself. Not only that, but I’ve learned to trust my body intelligence in a very logical way, learning about my true decision-making strategy. I now have an authentic remedy to stop the endless chatter. This has given me a new and trustworthy way of getting back into flow with life. It has shown me how I can be successful and thrive. And most importantly it has given me the ability to stop my monkey mind from running the show.

I know the monkey chatter will never entirely go away, but it is way less noisy. At times, I still catch a wayward monkey screeching at me trying to take me off track. But now I can have a laugh with it knowing its home base. In the end it is all about awareness.
